Nashville International Piano Competition
Rules, Requirements, & Policies

APPLICATION RULES 

In order for a student to be considered for the Nashville International Piano Competition (NIPC), the application must be received with the non-refundable $100 application fee (not postmarked) no later than midnight, March 1, 2023. The video must be received (not postmarked) no later than midnight, March 1, 2023.

Note: Proof of age by signature from a parent/guardian or teacher, a photo and biography will be required from accepted finalists.

Performance Rules

Minimum of 3 pieces

No maximum time limit. However, only 18 minutes total will be heard by the judges.

Repeats are optional

Contestant must play at competition what is submitted in application video

REPERTOIRE REQUIREMENTS

1. First movement of Beethoven Sonata

  • Exceptions: Op. 27 no. 2, Op. 49 no. 1 & no. 2, Op. 79

2. Virtuoso Etude by one of the following composers:

  • Fryderyk Chopin
  • Franz Liszt
  • Alexander Scriabin
  • Sergei Rachmaninoff
  • Claude Debussy
  • Béla Bartók
  • Igor Stravinsky
  • György Ligeti
  • Karol Szymanowski

3. A work of the student’s choice

COMPETITION RULES

  • The competition is open to pianists of any nationality in grades 9-12 (or within the four years before university entrance) as of March 1, 2023.
  • The first round will be judged from video recordings. Through examination of applications and video recordings,  preliminary judges will choose up to 15 entrants plus 3 alternates to compete in the final round.
  • Details for Videos:
  1. Candidates will submit one video recording of a minimum of the three required pieces.(It can be one video PER piece or one continuous video)
  2. Invited candidates will perform these pieces in live auditions.
  3. No maximum performance time limit for YouTube video, but the live performance is capped at 18 minutes.
  4. Music must be memorized.
  5. Videos should be submitted with a minimum size/quality of 640×480 and 12 bit sound (Standard Definition) and a maximum of 720p (High Definition).
  6. No special effects.
  7. Use single stationary camera angle placed 5-8 feet away.

There are two ways to submit videos:

Internet – Send a dropbox link to bherrenbruck@steinwaynashville.com of your video.

DVD – Put video on a DVD and send to:

The jury’s decisions are final and not subject to review.

The first-place winnerS of the NIPC competition will not be eligible to enter the competition.

  • Second prize naming rights
  • 1 full page ad in NIPC program and listing in program

Etude Sponsor — $3,00-$4,999

  • Etude level includes third prize naming rights.
  • 1 full page ad in NIPC program and listing in program

Impromptu — $2,000-$2,999: 1/2 page ad in NIPC program and listing in program

Intermezzo — $1,000-$1,999: 1/4 page ad in NIPC program and listing in program

Prelude — $500-$999: Listing in program

Grace Notes — $100-$499: Listing in program
